| POTTERY This is a beginner course in wheel-made or "thrown" pottery. You will learn to assess and prepare the clay for wheel work. This involves making it uniform and tight or "wedging" it. The goal of the workshop is for the student to gain a working knowledge of a few of the fundamentals of forming pieces on the potter‚s wheel. The wheels are powered by kicking˜there is no electricity. You are the power source, and the result can seem like magic.
We follow a series of steps that build upon themselves. This is a structured approach, and each step is practiced until it becomes part of your skills base. You will use a wooden rib and two shaping tools.
There is a wheel for each student. Depending on student progress, we will put together a small firing of student pieces. While the school focus is on mastering techniques, the pieces are often surprising and delightful. |

PAINTING AND DRAWING Using photography and thumbnail sketches, we will have the Vermont landscape as the subject of this course. Students will receive a watercolor sketchbook in which they can experiment with various techniques: pencil, pastel, and pen & ink drawing; wash drawing; and watercolor and acrylic painting.
Students will exhibit their drawings and paintings at the end of the session.
Each student will be given a sketchbook, drawing pencils, pen and ink, pastels, and 120-lb cold-press watercolor paper. Watercolors and acrylics will be provided for use in class. |
